The Jaguar MK2 is a medium sized luxury saloon car produced from 1959 by Jaguar Cars .
Adhering to Sir William Lyons' maxim of "grace, pace and space", the Jaguar MK2 was a beautiful, fast and capable saloon car and was raced successfully in the European Touring Car Championship.
Very much a car of its time, the Jaguar MK2 was to symbolise the ‘swinging sixties’ with its glamorous image and was beloved of both heroes and villains.
The Jaguar MK2 gained a reputation for transcending the borders of class and breeding, breaking down barriers in the name of good taste, owned by city bankers and bank robbers alike. The Jaguar MK2 gained a reputation as a capable car for bank raids, being fast (over 200 bhp (149 kW) and 125 mph (200 km/h) in 1959) and the British police were often to be found chasing them, as depicted in TV cop shows.
The Jaguar MK2 is also well known as the car driven (slightly more sedately) by fictional TV detective Inspector Morse played by the late John Thaw. |
